La nanotecnología ha permitido la creación de este CD de gran capacidad.

La Universidad Nacional de Taiwán ha desarrollado un nuevo disco compacto (CD) con una capacidad 150 veces mayor a la de un CD corriente. El nuevo CD ha sido creado en cooperación con "Ritek" y su gran capacidad le permite almacenar programas de televisión digital y otros documentos de imágenes y vídeos digitales de gran calidad. Valga decir que su capacidad es 20 veces mayor que las de los DVD.

Tsai Din-ping, responsable del proyecto, explica que se han invertido 720.000 euros para sacar adelante esta tecnología, basada en "nanotecnología", un proceso que registra cada bit de información en menos de 0,01 micrones. La marca normal del registro de un bit ocupa unos 800 nanómetros en un disco compacto típico de 650 megabytes y 400 nanómetros en un disco de DVD de 4,7 gigabytes.

El nuevo disco puede utilizarse en los actuales lectores de CD's y DVD, aunque deberán hacerse en fábrica algunas pequeñas modificaciones en el diseño del circuito integrado. Ritek ha asegurado que el coste de producción de este CD es similar al de un DVD.
